Why Do Diesel Particulate Filters Need To Be Serviced?

"A DPF (diesel particulate filter) filter is designed to catch & oxidize soot (unburned fuel/lube oil) and turn it into ash. The ash is pushed to the back of the filter and stored there. Over time it builds up and requires removal. With the cost of some new DPFs soaring to over $7000, routine maintenance is key in all aspects of the DPF. Being proactive in your service intervals will decrease downtime, service expenses and increase proper system operation and profit. Thus, it’s important to regularly clean and maintain your filters, not only to preserve the functionality of the filter but to save on fuel and protect your engine."
In a perfect world, DPF filters perform their regeneration cycles on their own with the truck. Some factors can cause the build up to intensify or inhibit regeneration including: excessive idling, cold & severe duty cycles, even a broken exhaust pipe. History has proven regeneration on its own will not deliver consistent results and regular cleaning of DPFs is required for operation.

What if I don't maintain my DPF?

  • Neglecting the maintenance of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) can lead to various issues, both for the vehicle and the environment. Here are some potential consequences of not maintaining a DPF:

  • Reduced Fuel Efficiency: A clogged or malfunctioning DPF can restrict exhaust flow, causing the engine to work harder and consume more fuel. This leads to decreased fuel efficiency and increased operating costs for the vehicle owner.
  • Engine Damage: Excessive soot buildup in the DPF can lead to backpressure in the exhaust system, which may cause engine damage over time. This can result in reduced engine performance, increased wear and tear, and potentially costly repairs.
  • DPF Failure: If the DPF becomes excessively clogged or damaged, it may fail to regenerate properly or become permanently blocked. This can trigger warning lights on the dashboard, engine derating, and ultimately require the replacement of the DPF, which can be expensive.
  • Emissions Non-Compliance: In regions with strict emissions regulations, vehicles equipped with malfunctioning or removed DPFs may fail emissions tests and face legal consequences. This can result in fines, penalties, or even vehicle registration suspension.
  • Environmental Impact: Diesel engines produce harmful pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and hydrocarbons. A malfunctioning DPF can increase the emission of these pollutants, contributing to air pollution and negative health effects for humans and the environment.
  • Vehicle Downtime: If a DPF-related issue occurs while the vehicle is in operation, it may lead to unplanned downtime for repairs. This can disrupt business operations, delay deliveries, and incur additional costs for the vehicle owner.
  • Voided Warranty: Neglecting DPF maintenance may void the vehicle manufacturer's warranty, leaving the owner responsible for any related repairs or replacements out of pocket.
